“In the late 1960’s, most people had never heard of “steam” cleaning. People would “shampoo” their carpets, using a rotary scrubber and a sudsy-soap. They would lather up and look and smell great, but the results were short lived. There was no good way to remove the sticky residue and most soil was just ground deeper into the carpet. That meant they’d re-soil very quickly. There had to be a better way!

John Sprague was the first to bring “Hot Water Extraction” carpet cleaning to this area. It’s commonly called “Steam Cleaning”, although no steam is actually produced. This “new” method would become the standard for clean carpets. While equipment and technology has advanced, it is still the only method recommended and approved by the major carpet mills.

John Sprague left a secure job at Thomas Steel to pursue a life as a cleaner. With a young family, it was a decision that many would question, but John never looked back. Many other carpet cleaners have come and gone, some inadvertently launched by John himself, but our family has worked together and remained at the core of this carpet cleaning business. We are the oldest and most established family run carpet cleaning business in the area.

Today the business is owned by John Sprague, Jr. and Stephen Sprague. We are “hands on” and in the business daily. John Sprague Cleaning expertly cleans all types of carpet as well as upholstered furniture, ceramic tile & grout, vinyl flooring products and more. We proudly serve residential customers, churches, businesses and government organizations. In 1999, we expanded into retail sales of vacuums and floor care products. Our store in Howland, Sprague’s Vacuums Plus, currently carries quality products by Riccar, Miele, Sebo, Oreck and others.
